John Peart was born in Brisbane in 1945 and after studying at Brisbane Technical College Art School he moved to Sydney.
In 1967 he collaborated with composer Nigel Butterly in a concert called Interaction which was an attempt to marry on-stage painting with musical performance.
In 1968 Peart won three major painting prizes, The Transfield Art Prize with Bivouac, the Mirror-Waratah Prize with Secondary First and the NBN 3 Prize with Colour Square, now in the Newcastle Region Art Gallery collection.
Peart travelled overseas in 1969 to study and returned to Australia in 1972. Since then he has continued to paint abstracts of increasing sophistication. He was included in the 1983 Australian Perspecta and in the same year the Mattara Invitation Art Purchase.
