David Aspden established his reputation in the 1960s by painting lyrically beautiful abstracts. In the context of the time, they were sometimes described as landscapes but often their forms were determined by his response to music, often jazz. His reputation as a leading Australian artist was confirmed by his posthumous selection for the 2012 Biennale of Sydney
