Bill Clements was born in 1933 in Bendigo, Victoria. He lived in Japan from 1964 to 1967, the USA and France from 1976 to 1977. He was an art teacher as well as a painter, printmaker and sculptor. In awarding the 1970 Transfield Prize to him, judge Sir Roland Penrose described Reading for August 6th as “a visual poem based on the tragedy of Hiroshima”. (August 6th was the date of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima).
