Elwyn Lynn was born in 1917 and although trained as a teacher he had no formal art training. He began painting in the mid 1940s and became associated with the Contemporary Art Society in the 1950s.
Through his activities with the Society (he was editor of the Broadsheet from 1955 to 1970) and his prolific writings he has been known as on of Sydney’s best known writers on art and apologists for the avant guard. He has written books on Sidney Nolan and Judy Cassab and became Editor of Art and Australia in 1983.
He has held numerous official posts including Curator of the Power gallery of Contemporary Art and Chairman of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council. His painting has been influenced greatly by the work of Antoni Tapies ad has always possessed a strong textural surface, often diversified with the incorporation of collage.
